Default Music Player needed features

Don't have the Beta yet but here are some features needed based on a year of use.

1) On the Go Playlists.
- Everyone that has been over for a party wants to be able to do this.
- When I practice guitar I like to create a playlist to play along to

2) Better Displaying of Album and song artists.
- i.e. The Crossroads box set (Album Artist: Eric Clapton, songs by Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos)

3) Better Displaying or song Artists on Compilations
- i.e. soundtracks, etc

4) More information on artists and albums
- Artist Wikis

5) Searching for songs and albums by genres
- i.e. Christmas, Blues, rock, alternative

We are making a list of additions for Music in Beta. I'll add these to the list.

#1- Not so sure this will be popular enough, but may be good later in Beta's developement.
#2#3#4 would be based on information already available in the IMDB data base. Otherwise it would all have to be manually added. Not so sure everything would be duable. Especially the artist wiki's. Will add to list.
#5 This is already a feature in Beta. The list is freakin' huge! ;-)

Thank you.

Default I would suggest #1 would be very popular

...from a music POV.

I've setup Boxee for 3 people and they always ask if they can do an on the go playlist for music.

Its nice for that person that like to play the party DJ.

Not saying it does not have merrit, but I've put Boxee on dozens of peeps PC's (some are music freaks) and have not been asked about it and none have use it. I did add it to the llst though for the DJ's in the house.

Can't make any promises it will make the short list, OK?

Default since alpha, I agree.

It's been missing, in a big way. I have the same issue.. that everyone I show Boxee wants some kind of playlist. While Pandora/LastFM does a great job of a webapp random playlist, it doesn't have a lot of music us collectors have. Right now your population is the tech-enthused collector because boxee takes away the need to juggle programs to have all your media at your fingertips. We have a lot of media.

I understand that webapps are the priority, but a playlist feature in the music section would be a HUGE improvement. I can't get people to use boxee because it's missing it half the time. At the moment, the music side is basically broken, there's no point to it besides having an attractive way to say, "Hey, look how much music I have.".

It IS pretty though!

I like to do a random play all with my music on other programs and my mp3 player. I'd like to use Boxee for everything, but that random play all feature is missing for me. Also, perhaps for way down the line, but I would like to see a song rating system implemented that affects how often tracks are played at random. I haven't seen anyone really pull this off very well.

Well, this is Beta. So not everything is up to snuff yet and by nature we can't expect it to be. It's not like the Dev's purposely made a huge oversight. I read a lot of posts where users feel there was this big mistake or purposely left out all these options. This is quite the contrary. The options everyone is asking for are/were well known going in. Remember, these guys are media nuts too. But somethings have to be first and some last at getting coded into beta. And everyone feels that their's is the most important. Like me, I feel hardware acceleration is the most important for online video content. Music is 4th on my personal list.

The Smods too have built a list of "Must Haves" based on YOUR suggestions (and frequncy) for the devs to work on regarding all the media formats in Beta. So, many will get worked in over time as each build gets updated and released. So, keep those ideas flowing.

Be patient, Beta is just that...beta. Options and improvements are coming with each release.

I wanted to add a "me too" to this thread because the absence of playlist support, especially "On The Go", is a big gap and I have had similar experiences. People ask about it when I am showing off Boxee at parties and unfortunately no matter how much awesome stuff I show them, it is this missing "basic" feature which is what they remember.

I think since most people are so familiar with iTunes they expect that level of functionality in any media software. What I have had to do at parties is turn off Boxee and fire up Rhythmbox and use that for music. That is the kind of functionality Boxee needs for it to be useful to those of us who are serious - very serious - music collectors. I have about 400GB of music, all very deliberately tagged and organized. For Boxee to be my music player I would need the ability to do what I can with Rhythmbox, e.g. select genres Indie, Punk, Classic Alternative and then select randomize; or create a new playlist and let people add songs to it as if it was a jukebox.

Please don't consider this a complaint - Boxee is great in every other way. But I am concerned for Boxee that if there aren't enough serious music collectors speaking up, a feature that is likely on many people's "must have" list will be under-prioritized and it will cost Boxee part of their audience.

I had thought perhaps about trying to write a Boxee app that would allow building an On The Go playlist which could then be fed to a local shoutcast server. But since the support for arbitrary media in sources.xml was dropped in the beta, I don't know how I could get Boxee to listen to the shoutcast server on localhost. So that idea is probably not worth pursuing.

It's not just the "serious music collectors" that want these features, my friend. Even us "casual collectors" (only around 30GB of music myself) want the same basic functionality in Boxee that we can get from any number of other music players, but like the judge has mentioned, there are things with a higher priority right now. Since Boxee is primarily a video app, we can't expect them to set aside that side of development in favor of what we might want. We just have to be patient and they will get to it... that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep reminding them of the things we want, though.

I very much want to request the playlist feature as well! It would make using Boxee during parties a lot easier.
