Default connect boxee device to windows 7 folders guide

I have determined that this guide below is more for windows 7 X64, boxee seems to be much happier with win 7 x32 and most of these changed here are not necesary with win 7 x32 for whatever reason.

if you have win 7x32 I would FIRST try only doing A) uninstall windows live anything, B) set network type to HOME C) use share option to create share for EVERYONE as near bottom of guide

follow all these instructions from gmd024 (slightly modified)

Firstly, configure Sharing and Discovery:

Make sure your network type is set to HOME - not public

1. Navigate to the Network and Sharing Center via the Control Panel
2. Click on the down arrow icons and select ON/OFF as follows:
Network Discovery - ON
File Sharing - ON
Public Folder Sharing - OFF
Printer Sharing - ON
Password Protected Sharing - OFF (when i tried turning this ON, it killed my file shares to boxee, even with regedit to allow ANON under everyone)
Media Sharing - OFF (I could not find this in my version of windows 7 so i ignored it, I did find a choice about 40 bit vs 128 bit, I chose 40 or 56 bit)
User accounts ON (gmd guide didnt have this choice)

Next, configure the folder you want to share:

1. Select the folder
2. Right-click and choose 'Share' from the menu
3. From the drop-down box select the Everyone (All users in this list) account, making sure permissions are set to 'Reader'
4. Click the buttons Add, Share and Done.

Here are some further registry 'tweaks' if this doesn't work: (NOTE: I tested undoing registry edits on my windows 7 ult 64 bit, boxee still works fine, so for me REGEDITS were unnecessary)

WARNING: This requires editing your PC's registry which, if edited incorrectly, can cause Windows systems to become unstable and unusable. So, follow the instructions below at your own risk. - we are not responsible for any damage caused by following these steps.

1. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor (search regedit in the start button).
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
2. On the right side, double-click on 'everyoneincludesanonymous' and change the 'Value data' from '0' to '1'
3. Double-click on 'NoLmHash' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'
4. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor:
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManSe rver\Param eters
5. Double-click on 'restrictnullsessaccess' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'
6. Close the registry editor

I also uninstalled windows live anything from my program list in control panel

Finally, restart your PC

THEN, after you reboot your PC, I would recommend turning off your windows firewall until after your boxee connects at the end of this guide, then turn it back on

when you use boxee to scan for file sources

when you see the samba shares it should say lots like

COMPUTERA / MOVIES (Samba)
COMPUTERA / PORN (Samba)
COMPUTERA / FAMILYVIDEOS (Samba)

if you are just seeing

COMPUTERA (Samba)

with no / then its not seeing your shares at all - and you have not followed instructions above perhaps?

lastly the SHARES themselves are very important, I have confirmed a few things

1) if you used the advanced share options to share a folder, for some reason it WILL NOT work, even if you set the everyone permission, don't ask me why, so do not share with advanced share, use the NOOB windows share choice
2) on your share options, make sure you only have 3 permissions set,
a) administrators owner
b) everyone read
c) your_username_on_windows read/write

I noticed that with other permissions in there (more than the above) some of my shares did not work

I also noticed that windows 7 is a bit buggy, when I changed permission on shares they did not truly go into effect until AFTER I rebooted my pc in some cases

Turn windows firewall back on once boxee works (my boxee works with win7 x64 ult firewall on)

if this post gets your file sharing working, bump this thread so others can see it and follow.....

PS - if you notice any other bugs that stop it working, or other suggestions, add them

Just wanted to add for people that have the windows 7 setup without doing all those steps, ie where boxee for windows and most other devices would share anyways, I kept stumbling over that fact that the boxee box didnt want administrator as my user name but rather Gus, the actually login name for windows. I know this may seem as common sense to some but even with boxee on windows the login for accessing stuff on my computer was administrator and then the windows password I had for the admin account. Hope this helps someone, as I spent about an hour of frustration trying to figure that out.

Thanks - good tip -- I struggled with this a while back on a couple other devices on my network until realizing what you mentioned

I'm glad I'm not the only one . I was literally about to throw the remote across the room. I'm usually not violent and have plenty of patience with tech stuff, but that got under my skin since that administrator user name worked on the boxee software for windows.

thanks for starting a guide. i have some notes on box side network configuration that i have typed up and will post in the next day or so.

you should be able to use password protection
you should be able to set the share to share with everyone
there is a ui option in win7 (at least) that lets you control the regkey around everyone including anonymous; i.e. you can set the shares to allow guest access on w7.
alternatively, you should be able to do your username/password to get access to the shares from your home folder.

using administrator for smb isn't really what you want; i would have to review what restrictions windows places on that. but in general you want to share from the user account and/or allow guest access on your shares.

Hey Boxee were is the guide to sharing with windows 7? Why do you not have this up in the documentation. Why do we have users on here having guess how to set this up.
Some support would be nice PLEASE.

Update:
Ok I see dconti has replied. But really guys, you announced this box a year ago and your writing documentation now. come on.

Hi Peteostro -

We are working on getting documentation up specifically for windows 7. Note that file sharing is different for each platform and, surprisingly, accessing windows shares with SMB is harder than it is for linux or macosx.

The simplified process is basically this. On your win7 PC,

* Make sure your network type is set as 'home' (not 'work' or 'public')
* Make sure your windows PC is on the same subnet (easiest if your PC is hooked up to the same router your boxee box connects to)
* Make sure your windows machine has file sharing enabled, and either a) allows guest access, or b) has a user account and password that you don't mind entering on the boxee from your tv
