Default Privacy questions

What exactly does it mean when it says that a private folder will not be scanned? I have set a folder to private yet it seems to behave and navigate like any other folder. Should it be different? Is this a bug?

Does this private option simply refer to showing up as recently watched to my friends? If so is there not a way to make it more hidden locally? I don't want to sit down to watch something with guests and have them see all the private stuff as I navigate around the menus.

Private tells boxee not to grab the artwork, which is nice for home movies, nor does it feed into the social (twitter, friendfeed, etc) network. If you want to have an invisible folder, or hidden by means of a password, this is a good idea for a new feature.

You should be able to achieve this as a somewhat hidden manner by nesting folders that are private. Tom, what do you think?

I think there is a usability issue here if Private in Boxee means "don't get the coverart" because to me the word private does not suggest anything to do with cover art.

And as a related issue I think you definitely need a way to filter out certain content from showing up when navigating Boxee. It's reasonable to assume that adults have adult content which they might like to have less viability than the rest of the content.

Imagine inviting a wholesome girl back to your place to watch a movie and while you are loading it up she sees the stuff you were watching the night before.

"Private" in Boxee not only means that it will not be scanned into the database but the means that your friends will see that you played/viewed that file, nor can you recommend something that is marked as private. so if you want to hide your porn then making it as private is not the way as anyone will still be able to access it locally and it will still be listed is last viewed history on the home page in the Boxee GUI

for recently watched we have added a feature to remove the item (click it and select remove).

boxee will not identify any adult content, unless it misidentifies something. next version you will be able to manually select the correct meta data or remove it altogether.

Like I say, I think this is a usability issue. "Private" to me suggests something that is hidden, or not revealed to its full extent. The feature currently called Private is something different from that. My suggestion is to change the terminology/name of this feature to something more fitting

There are any number of different things you could call this, but the one which is the closest to what you already have is "Personal", which to me is a more fitting word than "Private" as it suggests media which is not commercial but rather home movies, holiday snaps etc. Personal media and private media are different things!

This is great to hear. I'm sure by the final release you will have everything adult friendly.

Not that I have a huge adult movie collection it would be nice if boxee could identify them.

Boxee could always search iafd.com if no direct hits happen on imdb.com.

At least the option to un-recognize movies would be appreciated.
