neat topic idea... thought, i'm not sure we 'know' anything.

so:
linux-based (debian-stable, not ubuntu.)
hackable
hdmi
gigabyte
802.11n
x86 or lpia (atom)
optical sound
usable usb-ports x2
esata x1
rf remote with a bunch of buttons. (in the style of snapstream's firefly.)

don't care about a dvd-drive, tv tuner, or lcd... don't want this thing costing $5,000USD.

but, if it had a tv-tuner, also throw in a myth-backend, and make boxee a true myth-frontend.

i run boxee 0.9.20 on: ubuntu 9.10, windows xp sp3 (virtual machine), windows 7 and a neuros link hacked to all hell.

what super powers does a 'super mod' have? the 'super ban'... that, and laser vision.

  • Output 1080p high bitrate without breaking a sweat
  • HDMI out
  • Digital Optical out
  • Blu-Ray with HDMI 1.3 as an option would be nice (as you are a company, you could license the Blu-Ray tech)
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • 802.11n
  • 2x USB (one at front, one at back)
  • All in one memory card reader, hidden on fron (like ps3)
  • Has to be hackable for people to do as they wish

That all sounds good, Bluray would be nice but not needed if you just download or copy the movies to the STB a 1TB drive would be great to have an 4 or more USB ports for added storage.

Bluetooth for mouse and keyboard or even the Remote would be a nice to have.

I see no reason why Boxee couldn't pay Sony the price tag to include blu-ray support

I think the industry is moving away from having media on a local HTPC. It's moving more towards the idea of having a server. I've been doing it for years, and i've seen many friends doing the same thing. Mainly to support multiple HTPCs.

-Boxee Set-Top-Box
-Boxee Server anyone?

I think if Boxee are serious about joining this market, then Blu-Ray (once it's taken off) would be a major selling point of the STB.

Component Out is kind of a 'must', too.

In general the HW should be powerful enough to support matrovska/.mkv files up to 1080i/p etc.

-should be able to handle 1080p
-HDMI, component, optical outputs (optical is not necessary but why not)
-1x USB, 1x Firewire 800(only on back)
-Blu-Ray (don't really care for it, but if you can include it why not)
-Gigabit ethernet
-802.11n

MUST BE UNDER $300 (preferrably under $200 even), it can be as simple as the Apple TV, but it must be able to play 1080p
