Thanks
What is the failure?

I had one person that said they had to adjust the path, the OSBoot was not present. I think they were on a Windows machine using some kind of ftp client.

If you can navigate to the directory then check the following:

Did you do step 4 before you tried to copy?
4. sudo chmod ugo+r openvpnstart
(if you did not you will get an error about not being able to copy the full directory)

@mwpei

You are a genius. It works great! It would be great if your plugin could have a "status" to know if there is currently a vpn running or not. I got an error once... I'll try to figure out when it happens/why.

Thanks a lot mwpei !

I totally agree, status is the next thing I am going to work on.

The biggest problem I am having right now with my "get the status code" is how to display it, and how to prevent boxee from caching it.

If any boxee developers are reading this a few hints on how to one can display a status would be very helpful.

When executing "sudo kextload tun.kext", I got this error :
kextload: unable to register module with kernel
kextload: a link/load error occured for kernel extension tun.kext

This can be solved by loading turbo_kext_enabler.bin "sudo /Users/frontrow/Applications/turbo_kext_enabler.bin"
and then rexecuting "sudo kextload tun.kext".

To install turbo_kext_enabler.bin, I followed steps provided here : http://forums.boxee.tv/showpost.php?...0&postcount=36

@brddd Thanks for pointing out that solution !

Wow this looks great! I won't be able to play with this until I get back home tonight but had a quick question. Does this mean we can set specific vpn servers on a usage by usage basis for services we need (eg. hulu), but keep the default non-vpn setting for services we dont (eg iplayer)?

Thanks!

Geoffrey

Yes you can, but you have to go into the plugin and turn the vpn on an off when you want to go from Hulu to BBC(iplayer). If you live outside of the US and the UK then you can setup two config files, one for a US vpn account and one for a UK vpn account (still trying to find one) then you can view both Hulu and BBC by just switching vpn tunnels.

Hmm, getting an error when trying to startup openvpn...

Code:
-bash-2.05b$ openvpn --config /Users/frontrow/Library/openvpn/openvpn.conf
Fri Feb 13 00:46:56 2009 OpenVPN 2.1_rc15 i386-apple-darwin9.6.0 [SSL] [LZO2] built on Feb 5 2009

Fri Feb 13 00:46:56 2009 NOTE: OpenVPN 2.1 requires '--script-security 2' or higher to call user-defined scripts or executables
Fri Feb 13 00:46:56 2009 Cannot load certificate file client.crt: error:02001002:system library:fopen:No such file or directory: error:20074002:BIO routines:FILE_CTRL:system lib: error:140AD002:SSL routines:SSL_CTX_use_certificate_file:system lib
Fri Feb 13 00:46:56 2009 Exiting
Not sure how to enable the certificate, but then again I thought I followed the steps pretty closely. Any ideas?

Geoffrey

@Mwpei et al:

This service may be of interest to test with your plugin: http://www.cienen.com/sharedip.html

I have not used them however what is interesting is that they offer Canadian, US and UK servers as a package. I know Witopia is working on doing this and so is VforVPN but if you can't wait, might wish to give it a go!

Don't have ATV but would love to give your plugin a try if you port it to Linux/Ubuntu! Let me know if and when that transpires.

Have done a search on running multiple VPN sessions in Ubuntu but haven't got anything useful as of yet. Please drop me a msg if you have any tips.

Peace,

Tranceparance :-)

Smile White Screen On Hulu - Atv

Hello mwpei and Boxeers

thanks for working on the vpn plugin .

I followed your instructions, a few bumps along the way that eventually i managed to figure out. . . Thanks again as I live in bloody china, and can't see hulu unless on the Mac. Now, after installing your sexy plugin, copying hotspot, fixing permissions, installing the turbo_kext_enabler i can run the tun.kext and it says that "extension tun.kext is already loaded" sounds good, however when i try the second test, > sudo openvpn --config /Users/frontrow/Library/openvpn/openvpn.conf it tells me that : In [CMD-LINE]:1: Error opening configuration file: /Users/frontrow/Library/openvpn/openvpn.conf
what is this now?

By the way, i didn't have a openvpn folder on the Library, so i created it manually , inside i put the config.hvpn file.

The thing is... that on Boxee, on the Atv i start your plugin, and when accessing Hulu or any other US channel, i don't get the black message saying that I am outside the US. Instead, i get a whole White screen and seems that the video is already playing, however i can't see or listen anything. What can be the cause? thanks for any help

This looks like you are missing the client.crt file from within the \users\frontrow\library\openvpn

I am not sure if I said that you had to copy this over but it looks like that is your problem. If this does not fix your problem can you answer the following questions.
what vpn app do you have installed? (hotspot or tunnelBlick)
what files do you have in the \users\frontrow\library\openvpn dir?
