Boxee

regression: UPNP with PlayOn upnp server is either too slow to operate or hang the box

Details

  • Product:
    Boxee Client
  • Severity:
    Major
  • Version:
    1.2.0.20310
  • Operating System:
    Boxee Box
  • Number of attachments:
    1

Description

scenario:
Adding a source to PlayOn upnp server as root with no scanning.
navigating inside the upnp folders is very slow, the spinning circle is spinning for few minutes, and can hang the box.
when playback start and hang, boxee cpu is high and does not response.

partial workaround:
do not define a source to PlayOn UPNP root.
disable all channels and plugins which are not in use.
define the boxee source to "/PlayOn/My Media/" folder
although the response time of playing items is still very slow and can take a minute before movie starts.

reported by gmd user name gmd024 :
UPnP issue first occurred in the RC1 v. and has continued with RC2 - my 2nd BBox with the latest public release 1.1.2 does not have this issue

remove/recreate the UPNP sources does not help in my case

I can navigate anywhere in PlayOn but when finally choosing a show/content to watch I get the spinning circle (continous/non stop) and when trying to back out of the sp. circle my BBox freezes for about 2 minutes and when it un-freezes it will not power down with the remote - I have to use the switch on the Box

I am having the same issue as gmd024. I had to restore my box back to the latest public release 1.1.2 to get PlayOn to work right again!

Rafael - I'm a little confused about what you are describing in your workaround: " do not define a source to PlayOn UPNP root. define the boxee source to "/PlayOn/My Media/" folder " - can you please explain this a little better

I don't see any other way of adding PlayOn as a file source in the BBox other than having Boxee scan for new sources and choosing PO when Boxee finds it on the ' upnp://playon... path ' -- which is what has worked for me on every past frmw version - until the last 2 RC releases

Rafael - I just now followed your suggestion above (files/network/upnp - + button) and I get the same result as I described earlier which is... I can navigate anywhere in PlayOn but when I finally choose a show/content to watch all I get is the continous spinning circle and and trying to back out of this scenario with the remote will freeze the BBox for about 2 minutes

And I did check the same PO show coming from the same PO server on the Boxee for windows app (on my W7 PC) just to be sure the content was 'playable' from the content provider... and it played without issue in the Boxee beta app

What I meant about the path not coming close was... - I should have worded that statement a little differently --- the path that I see when I add PlayOn by choosing the + button is... upnp://playon (XPS3)/... and then whatever folder/content provider I'm trying to access - ie... comedy central or cbs -- "XPS3" is the name of my W7 PC

My problem seems odd, because as I mentioned I can find/navigate PlayOn, I just can not play any shows/content (maybe that's why you created a separate ticket for my PO issue) --- and I'm sorry for asking all the questions about my issue here, but my PO ticket has not been assigned and the question I asked there was not replied to/answered

Same issue, also thumbnails for Playon content not showing.
I am currently running previous Firmware so Playon will work.
This is the biggest issue pertaining to boxee box at the moment.
It should be fixed before any other issue is looked at.

upgrading playon server from 2.59.3847.95 to 3.3.11.2391
did not solve this issue.
to reduce the load on playon upnp:
* uncheck the Boxee settings for auto creation of thumbnails.
* At PlayOn, remove all PlayOn plugins and channels which are not in use.

UPDATE - PlayOn is working now, but navigation is 'Slooow' - by slow, I mean when clicking the 'enter' button on the BBox remote, the spinning circle stays on screen for a very long time before the selection comes up

I have 2 set ups on my network - one has PlayOn installed on a PC with a BBox at this location --- and the other has PlayOn installed on a different PC with a 2nd BBox at that location

When I saw Rafael's above post today I decided to try PO in the BBox again since it's been a while that I last tried it

To my surprise PO worked on the one set up/location (but slow as mentioned above)

So I went to the other PO set up at a different location on the network and PO was still 'not' working -- I troubleshot the PO issue at this 2nd location for a couple hours and finally got it to work - I'm not 100% sure what I did to make it work, but I believe it was re-adding PO as a file source (set to never scan)

Anyway, I'm glad to see PO working again, even though navigation is sloow - but I'm suspicious that it may still be buggy and might 'break' again -- I'll keep checking it each day or so and report back if it breaks again

btw - I'm using the frmw v120.20310 on both BBoxes -- and most current v. of PO, v3.4.14.2444 -- the release notes for the most current PO v. say it's v3.4.14.2443 -- but it installs as v3.4.14.2444 on both of my PCs

It would be nice to hear from others who posted in this ticket if PO is/is not working now - and maybe before reporting, try to re-add PO in the BBox's 'Settings/File Sources' with scanning set to 'never'

Still not working here, though it is working better.
I've disabled all plug-ins/channels in Play-on that I am currently not using, and have upgraded to the most recent software version (3.4.14.2444).
I am using the recent Boxee f/w (1.2.0.20310).
Now when I browse the Play-on folder via UPnP, it doesn't lock the Boxee up, I just get a file corrupted error. This was in the Comedy Central folder. The Hulu folder still won't show any media, just the unable to connect folder
It is very slow, sometimes upward of a minute until it will see the contents of each folder. At times when I try and browse a UPnP folder, Boxee wars me that I have no internet connection, but it comes right back. Very strange.

UPDATE -- I'm not sure if this is helpful at all for Boxee in troubleshooting this PlayOn issue, but I checked to see if PlayOn would function on the BBox when it was enabled on my HP WHSr over my wired Gb network, and it would 'Not' - I could navigate PlayOn (very slowly) but when finally choosing a show/content to play, I would get the spinning circle from the BBox and it never would access/play the content in PlayOn

I was using the most recent version of PlayOn (v3.4.17.2477 - but 'Not' with the PlayLater DVR installed)

Also, PlayOn is still functioning on the BBox (as mentioned previously) when PlayOn (v3.4.17.2477) is enabled on a W7 PC over the same wired Gb network - however, PlayOn is still very slooow to navigate (ie... it takes a very long time after clicking the enter button on the BBox remote for the selection to actually happen)

Thought I had the updated version of Playon, but I didn't. I updated it and now things appear to be worse. My Boxee Box won't even connect to my Playon server now. Every once in a while, I'll check to see if I can connect. At times, I can browse my channels, but not for long. I have many devices that can easily connect to my Playon server which located on a PC running Windows XP. Playon does not seem to want to cooperate with Boxee for some strange reason. Hope the team gets a fix on it soon.

I read another post that you can access playon via the boxee browser, m.playon.tv and I tried it. It works great, actually much better than accessing via upnp. The recent firmware definitely impacted upnp device access. I hope they resolve soon. In the mean time give m.playon.tv a try.

I will say that m.playon.tv does work, however it is far from perfect. I only get audio via the browser about 50% of the time. Only after a reboot will it play with sound. Also, the playback controls don't work (i.e. pause/play has no effect, have to exit to browser to pause or resume)

m.playon.tv in the BBox's browser is working for me -- I have no problems with the audio - pause and play/resume work fine and so does mute/volume up/down -- if you allow the control bar at the bottom of the screen to auto-dissappear you can hit the left/right arrow buttons on the BBox's remote to bring the bar back on screen and then the cursor can be used to pause/resume and to mute or adjust volume up/down

The only function that does not work is advancing forward or reverse in the time line on the control bar at the screen's bottom... but I believe this function never did work in PlayOn

Now this is just weird. I recently stopped using the wireless connection on my Boxee box and went back to using Ethernet cable. Guess what? My Boxee can now discover UPNP devices on my network. So far, I've been able to browse UPNP devices, but haven't been able to play any files yet.

Now that I think of it, when I first started using the Boxee Box, I was using a hard wired connection and could browse UPNP devices. I was unable to locate any UPNP devices when I started using a wireless connection.

Wow, this issue has been open for nearly four months. Unfortunately, I just found out about it when my Boxee box arrived today and I tried to get Playon working. I'm having the same problem. UPNP is very flaky with wireless, and wired access allows viewing of folders, albeit extremely slowly. Confirmed that the latest version of Playon does not fix the issue.

I don't believe UPnP is the issue. I believe it's a DLNA issue.
The box recognized any UPnP device well, SAMBA works which is UPnP.
My NAS works fine UPnP(SAMBA).
Playon is recognize but has difficulty communicating, Playon is DLNA compliant.
It seems Boxee is no longer DLNA compliant after Firmware 1.1.2.19250.

I think that team Boxee is deliberately sabotaging service with Playon.
DLNA and compatibility with Playon is the only reason i chose Boxee box over Logitech revue.
It wouldn't bother me as much if they didn't force these updates on everyone.
In the latest update on the box, it does not recognise Playon at all.

gmd, that is correct. However, if you go through the UI under files, and select upnp, and choose the play on server it does not. My comment regarding button mashing is that repeatedly select the play on server several times in a short time span seemed to have worked.

That's the first report I've read where it didn't work. Perhaps you have some other networking issues in your setup.

Probably best to start a thread in the forums and post what "does not work" really means (e.g. do you get an error message, if so, what is it?, etc)
