Audio in MKV videos goes out of sync

Operating System: Windows Vista

 Description  « Hide
Using MakeMKV to create MKV files and playing them back in Boxee causes audio sync issues after some playback (or forward/reverse). According to the author of MakeMKV, this is an old version splitter issue with XBMC/Boxee.

This doesn't happen with all files created by MKV and the problem does not exist when using VLC or MPC-HC.

My Buffy The Vampire Slayer (season 4 & 5) and Angel (season 1 & 2) MKVs have sync problems, but not with my Extras DVDs (season 2). Haven't tested any other of my DVDs yet. And so far only with DVD/MPEG2 -> MKV.

Supposedly the bug is now fixed in XBMC:

I'm experiencing this same issue. I've had a similar problem before with compressed videos where the issue seemed to be that the frame rate being set incorrectly somehow. This doesn't appear to be the case this time around. The videos are ripped from DVD's using MakeMKV, are not compressed in anyway, and all appear to have the correct frame rate (same as on DVD). Media Player Classic can play the videos correctly as well, and VLC can play them without the audio sync problem (although VLC has it's own special set of problems when it comes to mkv files). In other words, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the way the files were created, but rather the way Boxee is playing them back.

The problem exists when the file is played both locally and over a network share. It only occurs with certain videos, so it's not a universal problem. For example, Battlestar Galactica (2003) plays just fine, but X-Files Season 6 does not. Most of my DVD's that I have tried do work, I've only noticed the problem with a few television shows (where it happens to all episodes in a season).

If this problem has indeed been fixed on XBMC, then that is confirmation that the problem is on Boxee's side not on the video creation side. It also seems to suggest that a fix is available which could be ported to Boxee.

Fast forwarding video on starting and MKV in 720p from a server (snow leopard)
Playing back a video from a server brings the video to the screen very fast but at twice or three times the speed of the sound and video. Pausing and hitting play again solves the issue. This same bug used to happen with DVD content every time

Using the pre-release on 32 bit Karmic, I am getting this "high-speed playback" bug a LOT.
I get it randomly on video feeds, apps, local files (it even happened on Pandora) - everything just goes insanely fast and garbled. Sometimes pause/play combo works, sometimes I just rewind a million times or give up completely. No real rhyme or reason to when it kicks in (or why it quits).
