I am having this issue with a Sony STR-DE935 receiver. I get no sound from a 5.1 DD signal through the optical connection.

I have same issue with a Sony STR-DE945. No DD 5.1 sound through optical when Navigation Sound is On. When the "Navigation Sound" is turned off, DD 5.1 Sound through optical works after I first play a movie with a DTS sound track. Blue surround light on receiver is off, even though 5.1 sound is being output from DD movie.

I have the STR-DB830. I just get a short blip of audio when the video starts and then silence. Blue light usually comes on but not always.

The Thanksgiving update didn't change anything (not that anyone suggested it would). Still can't get a 5.1 DD stream to play unless I trick the Boxee Box by first having it play a DTS stream, and even then it's hit and miss.

My Boxee Box and Sony receiver (STR-DB795) have also the same problem with no audio with DD 5.1 Stream. With Audio set to "All Output" i have proper 2ch stereosound via optical connection. If I change the Settings to S/PDIF optical and tick DTS and DOLBY DIGITAL, i have no audio and the blue LED of the Receiver that shine if he receives DTS or DD 5.1 Input is dark.

I was reading another thread somewhat related to this.

I have my Boxee set like this
go to:
Settings>System>Audio and make sure "Audio Output" is set to "All Outputs" and not just one of the individual cables (HDMI, S/PDIF, RCA). In which case Dolby Digital 5.1 does not work on my receiver.

If I set "Audio Output" to "S/PDIF" and check Digital, DTS etc. Then Dolby Digital 5.1 works on my receiver.

I am not sure if this is a bug or intentional.

Actually as per Jamies advice, I just changed my audio settings in System>Audio and made sure "Audio Output" was set to "All Outputs" and it worked fine for AC3 5.1.

Actually, if the audio output is set to "All Outputs" the Boxee Box will NOT output a 5.1 signal through the optical connection. Apparently, this is as Boxee intended, although there have been a number of people asking for the ability to send an HDMI signal to the tv and a 5.1 DD or DTS signal to their receiver simultaneously (and presumably the hardware is capable of doing this). Anyway, if you're playing a movie with AC3 5.1 audio and checking "All Outputs," you won't get a 5.1 stream; the optical cable will only be carrying a stereo signal to your receiver.

(as posted on http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?p=139578)

I have a Sony STR-K850P receiver. It's pretty old, though supports DTS and DD5.1. When I plug in the BB via optical, it's silent on all DTS and DD audio streams. Menu sounds do work though. If I unclick "receiver supports DTS" and unclick "receiver supports DD", I can then hear the proper audio, but that's just because the BB is transcoding to PCM 2 channel.

Playing these same MKV (H.264 + DTS) files on my PC via optical will turn on a blue light on the receiver indicating a proper DTS/DD stream.

Having the same issue on a Sony STR-DB830. It is about 10 years old, supports Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS. I am running the Boxee Box from the Optical Audio Out to the input on the receiver. The DD does not work. The reciever says that it is getting a DD signal but there is no audio. When I turn the DD Out off on the Boxee Box the reciever indicates that it is getting a PCM signal and I get a normal surrond sound indicator.

I forgot to mention that I played the same files as I do from a AppleTV (older model) and the receiver works fine. These are m4v files encoded with Handbrake and have the DD passed through.

I get the same error going to an Integra 6.9 receiver. I had to uncheck everything, in every choice, and finally pick 'all outputs' (and yes, I need all of them - analog, HDMI and Optical.) Why is this forced to a *choice*? You should be able to set the parameters on each output, individually, and then enable them all. In particular, if Boxee INTENDED this behavior - then that's a mistake.

The title of this issue should perhaps remove the Sony and change it to "multiple brands of receiver"?

I getting a similar issue with my Denon 1905 receiver as well. I have the audio output set to "All Outputs" on the BB. HDMI is going to the TV and an optical audio cable is going to the receiver. I wanted the ability to use only my TV speaker if I'm watching a TV show or some online streaming content. Then if I'm watching a video with AC3 or DTS audio, I would turn off the volume on my TV and use my receiver to output the 5.1 audio instead.

Dolby Digital does not work on my Sony STR-DE935 connected via SPDIF. I'm forced to use all outputs. Not ideal. Please try to fix soon. Nearby to boxee NYC office if you want to troubleshoot.

I solved this problem by upgrading my receiver.
So for the record, the Pioneer VSX-1120-k works perfectly with BB, DD5.1 and everything else.
Also don't bother buying an HDMI switch with toslink output thinking that might be a workaround. It doesn't help at all. Same problem when setting the BB to HDMI audio then having the HDMI switch send it to the receiver via toslink.

I also have the problem: For Dolby Digital encodes no sound through optical connection to Sony STR-DE935, though receiver shows full digital signal indicators. DTS passthru sound works. Unlike others, DD does not work immediately after playing a DTS sample. This has been a known issue now since Nov - anyone have an update on a fix?
