Switching audio and subtitles tracks in MKV files takes very long and freezes menu

Description

Switching audio tracks in MKV files takes very long and freezes menu. Previous audio track will continue playing for anywhere from 15 - 20 seconds while menu is frozen so not only do you miss dialogue in the language you select but you can't change anything else until Boxee Box finally completes the switch. The WDTV Live handles the switches instantaneously and since the subtitle handling is so much better with the Boxee Box, if the handling of multiple audio tracks is fixed, this would make Boxee Box ideal for my media requirements.

Been suffering from this problem from the very start. Very annoying for animes where I want to see how the Japanese vs English dubs compare.

I'm also experiencing this issue 100% of the time when trying to swap audio tracks. Both VLC and Media Player Classic can swap the audio tracks fine, so this doesn't appear to be an issue with the encoding of the episodes. My unit doesn't seem to recover from the freeze, and you have to power-cycle to get menu access.

Here also some other threads with users having the same issue:

There is a workaround (as detailed in one of the threads), however. If you pause the video, change the language, and then hit << (start from beginning), the audio will play. Even so, it would be nice to have this fixed!

I tried pausing the video and changing the audio track once and it froze the box. I am not going to try that again as I am really scared when this thing freezes and it freezes enough when I try to use some of the apps so I'll wait until they hopefully fix it so that I can switch tracks in realtime like I did with the WDTV Live.

Update --- I discovered today that this is an issue in .mp4 files as well. Also, the above workaround is inconsistent; sometimes you end up with an empty audio track and trying to stop the video, etc will make the UI completely unresponsive.

I just discovered this problem last night, and it happens on both MKV files and DVD ISO's. The DVD had 3 audio tracks (default was Turkish, then an English track, and English with commentary), and the only tracks that would *ever* work were Turkish and English+commentary; I was unable to get the plain English audio at all. The most annoying part of it is that the default language setting in Boxee seems to be ignored when starting the file, so on this DVD, we could only watch it in Turkish.

This is all most unfortunate, as I've purposefully been archiving all my media as dual-language (English + Turkish) when possible, so that we can choose which to watch. A huge chunk of the library is currently watchable only in Turkish.

I just wanted to add that I am getting this problem as well. I attempted to change the audio track from Japanese to English on an Anime mkv, and experienced the UI freeze, followed by no sound. I did not wait for 20 seconds to see if the audio came back on.

The file itself was only around 450MB in size, non-HD. When changing the audio track in VLC player on my computer, it did not have any problems.

Agreed, this is very annoying.
I'd also like to see a user interface change here. Why not let us select the wanted audio track from a drop-down menu instead? Then we wouldn't have to go through blindly cycling through the tracks until the wanted one turns up, (Yes, many of my rips have 4-6 audio tracks.) This is extremely cumbersome now when audio track switching takes a very long time and the UI is unresponsive.

Resolved by caching the subtitles and audio packets for the last 3 secs - on all tracks.
This can cause a higher memory consumption of the Boxee process - especially if there are many audio channels.

Still takes 10 seconds to switch to another audio track on 1.2.0.20310 (720p/h264/AAC/mkv).
Should I create a new issue or this one is going to be reopened? Please reply.
