Boxee Box lose Permission when using HFS+ no journaled USB drive

Details

  • Severity:
    Critical
  • Version:
    1.0.2.16619
  • Operating System:
    Boxee Box
  • Number of attachments:
    2

Description

The HFS+ USB drive (WD Elements 2TB) as been formatted no journaled and with all permission to read&write.
The drive is attached to the Boxee Box.
Boxee can read all the files fine and from my iMac I can accss the drive and play the files, edit them add file all works great.

BUT as soon as you restart/powerdown the BB and turn it on again:
the files can be played but the I can no longer have write permissions to access this drive from my iMac.
BB loose the permissions.
As a workaround, I need to connect HD drive to my iMac again and set the read&write permission of the drive all over again.

We tried another solution which was to add the Mac OS X username and password to SMB setting in the BB but nothing changes.
Basically the issue is that after a powerdown or restart the BB lose the permission again of the file and they can not be edited over the network (only played)

[Quote from skycap :

I have wrote about this problem in an other Mac Board. I´ve got an answer that is maybe the answer of this Problem.
Maybe the problem is, that the Boxee Box didn´t unmount the attached drives before sleeping, and the result ist that the permissions now set to read only. I don`t know the HFS rules, but this look plausibly.

We know the Box have sometime problems with shut down. Maybe is here an unmount bug?]

I think Skycap is entirely right !!! Boxee Box does not shut properly and it should unmounted the USB drive first but it doesn't I use to have the same issue with WD TV then they updated it and you could see the box unmounting the USB drive first then shutting off

No matter what you try the connected USB drive will lose write permissions after the BB is turned off or wakes from sleep. I have tried many different format options and the only one that maintains permissions is FAT32, and for obvious reasons this is not a viable option. If sleep mode on the BB is turned off and the box left on you can maintain write permissions, I am doing this for now as the BB only draws 36 watts.

HOW TO: Share an HFS+ drive on Boxee Box
Here's a little tutorial to help people with OS X and external HFS+ drives add them as USB drives to Boxee Box and share them:

- Plug drive into Mac
- Open Disk Utility
- Select the drive, hold Alt (Option) key and press File
- Select Disable Journaling
- Open Finger, right click on the drive and select Get Info
- Make sure Everyone is added and select Read and Write for their rights
- Click the golden lock and authenticate
- Click the little setting button by the Minus on the bottom and select "Apply to enclosed items"
- Eject the drive and plug it into the Boxee Box
- On the Boxee Box, under Network Settings / Servers
- Select "Enable Windows Sharing"
- Leave no password and user is guest
- Make sure you know the servername "boxeebox" is default
- On the Mac you should now see boxeebox under "shared" in Finder
- If you don't see it, open Finder, press Command + K and enter "smb://boxeebox" without quotes
- Select Guest account and select the partition that you want to connect to.

Hi rafael,
I just tried again word by word like you are saying and it works BUT once I turn off the BB it doesn't work any more and I replugged the USB drive to my Mac and still all good ! so it's clearly something wrong with BB software.
PS: My neighbour as the WD Live 1TB and I can edit and add file into it via my mac via my USB drive so it does work else where.

Well, as long as I don't turn off the BB and only put it to sleep I keep write permissions OK, so it is not much of an issue now that I just leave it on.

I recreated the issue like the others have stated. My HFS+ drive had all permissions set as in rafael's post and was working great until I turned off the boxee box. The permissions no longer allow me to write to the drive and will require me to disconnect the drive and hook up to my mac to reset.

Leaving the box on 24/7 it's not an option as you will consume lost of electricity and use the CPU too much. It's clear that this bug it's a major critical one and should be fixed asap as it's not an isolated or special request it's a major bug that everyone experience and so many threats are open on the forum about it !

supremely frustrating. Took me weeks to figure out how to get to my hfs+ drives over the network. (because of vague instructions after release / not mentioning that permissions needed to be applied to all subfolders) and now its all erased every reboot. needs a fix soon please!

I wrote to Avner (Boxee CEO) and got this reply, not sure that is the issue but we can cross fingers:

"Hi Cedric,

Fixing issues related to local playback are top of mind for us. You will see that the version coming out next week solves numerous issues related to playback.

I believe the bug you are referring to relates to SMB credentials not being saved between reboots. We fixed it in this release. Hope it will help. Dan Conti (our lead developer on all things SMB has been working on it).

We are spending more time on US content providers, but are also making progress in Canada, Australia and Europe.

Regards,
Avner"

No, it is not, luckily I have a windows machine around:), on the Mac, you probably have to install virtual machine to format a NTFS disk, or dual boot... not aware of any other ways... There is a utility called Mac Fuse that will allow you to install a NTFS driver, thus let you write to a NTFS disk natively, but I suppose it will not enable you to format a NTFS disk.

There are post in the forum saying this has been fixed. but you will have to unplug the USB, plug to a Mac, make sure everything is OK (permission and stuff), then re-plug the USB to Boxee Box. Any luck, anybody?

Tested with SP3 RC and it works great BUT after a restart of the BB is gone again ! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr Issue not fixed Grrrrrrrrrr

The only difference I can see with SP2 is that the boxeebox shows as a server instated of a computer on the mac osx finder but that's it.

I am using the latest RC and I can confirm that this is STILL an issue.
Everything works just fine until you reboot the Boxee - after that you lose write permissions and can only read the drives.

I followed these instructions exactly and it all worked until the Boxee rebooted:

BOXEE TEAM: The solution is simple is that the boxee box doesn't unmount the USB HD before shutdown therefore the BB lose the permission.

After the BB restart and lose the permission to the USB HD I connected my laptop to the USB HD and it wasn't showing (which show it wasn't shut properly) after a quick dis utility "verify disk" it's all back. Re-plugged it to the BB and the file transferred worked from my iMac to the boxee box , without re-configuring the permission.

This confirm my theory of what the issue is ;-)

ANOTHER ISSUE: Also when it's working the iMac lose the connection after few minutes therefor if you can't copy a big file !

Hi,

Thanks for keeping us updated.
Would it be possible for you to let us know very roughly when this will be solved?

I imagine you can´t know the exact date but something like "next week", "in two months", "next year".

Is really frustrating not being able to copy my files to the box to reproduce them online since that´s one of the few features we can use the box for outside the US.

Thanks in advance.

As you said it's a important issue and I do believe that this things should come as priority as it affect all Mac users in the world and it's really annoying when you see Boxee team focusing on Netflix or Vudu when a basic function doesn't work and it's advertise on your site as working !

This is misleading your customer and even more in the UK at $324 the box !!! when we all ready have NO content online compare to the US.

On Mac OS we don't have alternative of file format therefor we are stock !

Even though I really appreciate all the effort of the Boxee Team I think you don't have the priority right !

I'm using powerline adaptors via ethernet to my router from the BB and the write access problem still persists.

I've noticed that after re-connecting the external HDD (non-journled) to my iMac and re-applying the read/write permissions (everyone), I can still write to the drive (but not delete) for anything up to a week (but sometime just a day) with repeated reboots of the BB, but it eventually loses all write permissions and can do anything but read from it.

The only point when I have full control (write and delete either files or folder) is when the HDD is first re-connected with the permissions re-stored, after a reboot things start to fall apart, so clearly an un-mounting issue as many have pointed out.

In my opinion as a new users and customer of Boxee Box this is a critical issue as it has given me a bad first impression!

I have been out and paid money for Boxee Box and two new external HDD's then get Permission issues doesn't look good :/

This bug does get my vote - I have replicated it and confirm it is a show stopper.

OMG I cant believe it !!!! grrrrrrrrr i'm fuming ! Instated of taking care of the stupid US feature like Nexflix or VUDU they should focus on fixing major bug like this one even more when I bought the box I was told by Boxee that they support that format, it's also mention on the box and the website !

I thinking of suing them for misleading customers that same as thief !

"Critical" clearly has a different meaning in this support system.

Along with many other's, i've put up with this BS bug since the release of the box, and it needs fixing NOW!

This is really getting ridiculous! This issue has been know since the Boxee Box launch more than 4 months ago and the ability to write to remote HDDs with HFS+ support has been highlighted all the way from the beginning as a "feature" but never worked properly. There are 42 votes on this feature and a bunch of loyal followers who did a lot to help you guys identify and clarify this bug and all we get is another delay... Fiona 1.2 which is what, 6 months away? Seriously, pick up your game guys, this is just getting shameful :(

This is disappointing. Will reformatting my drive to NTFS fix this issue?

Corey, yes it will solve this issue... but on the other hand good luck with making NTFS work on OS X. I've been around mac for about 12 years now and still haven't found a bulletproof way of making NTFS work an a mac, either at home or work. And FAT32, forget about it due to the 4GB file size limit :( That's why we're all stuck here in the first place at the mercy of the Boxee team who plan to expand beyond the universe while struggling with making some of the basic features work as advertised.

@Corey @ Matej

Mac osX read NTFS but doesn't write therefor not going to be any help BUT if you install that plugin, it work great it gives your mac the driver to read/write

http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/

Tested and Approuve it I'm transferring all my video on my NTFS HD as we speak.

Maybe Boxee can pay for the plug in ! LOL

$35! Wow! I've used their free version at work for a while but I can say it's been less than stellar.

I have to re-format my external HD to NTFS just for this purpose. It has been working OK so far, the only problem I have is very slow transfer speed through Boxee Box, it is only getting about 4MB/s. I was told it was related to the NTFS-3G driver used in Linux. Slow, but better than nothing, I guess.

Performing fsck.hfsplus prior to mounting, cleans the filesystem hence allowing it to mount in R/W mode.

Just upgraded to the latest version (1.1.2.19250-8cbeb5c) last night and was successfully copying files from my Macbook to my connected HFS+ drive over Samba. However after shutting down the box and trying to copy files again this morning I'm now getting this permission error again... Is this regression?
