Hey Darwin,

Sorry to hear you're running into trouble keeping your Pandora login activated.

Just so I am clear on the problem, you are being asked to go to pandora.com/boxee to activate Pandora on your Boxee Box each time you start the application?

Not a problem Darwin - having trouble reproducing this issue.

We just published a new firmware release this weekend - does this fix your issue?

Bran - indeed it does.

Darwin - can you describe how you are shutting down the app? Do you sign out before you close the application?

I'm very frustrated by this bug also. Essentially every time I shut-down the boxee box, next time I open the pandora app I have to re-authenticate by going to pandoria.com/boxee. It appears to work OK if I just sleep the box or leave it fully powered, but in real life re-boots happen regularly.

Rob, to answer your question, no, I never log out of the app specifically, I just pause and hit the menu button to back out of the app, or just back out without pausing. Apparently the reboot of the box clears whatever local file is maintaining that authorization.

Agreed Tyler - definitely not the experience we're looking for either. The application's activation should persist until you sign it out.

Still trying to reproduce this one here in the office - tried several units and Pandora activation persists between power cycles. Even tried leaving the unit unplugged for various lengths of time before starting back up - still haven't had any success seeing this issue.

Can you provide the MAC address of your unit? Should be located on the bottom of your Boxee Box.

Sure Rob, my MAC is: 5C-D9-98-80-11-1A

I had a thought as to your difficulty duplicating. I didn't have the Pandora app set as a 'favorite'. I noticed today when I did that, it downloaded the app and seemed to store it permanently locally. When it wasn't a favorite, it would download again every time it was loaded. Perhaps your test boxes have the Pandora app as a favorite. I'll see if the issue continues for me now that I've set it.

:-( Nevermind, activation is still lost after setting Pandora as a favorite. A couple of interesting tidbits though: I have 2 user accounts setup on my box, mine and my wife's. Both have the pandora app configured and activated. In my account, I verified Pandora was working, paused the app, dropped back to the home screen, and then selected to shut down through the GUI. When the box rebooted, it goes right back into my account. I go to apps, select Pandora and sure enough it asks me to activate through the pandora.com/boxee website again (which I didn't). The odd part is that I switched over to my wife's user account, go to Pandora in her account and it fires right up with no authentication required. So it appears that it only clears the authentication of the account that's active when you reboot.

Since we're on the subject of pandora app weirdness, there is another bug in that different boxee user accounts don't maintain their own pandora accounts. Whichever pandora app I activate (either mine or my wife's), it becomes active on both boxee accounts. Shouldn't each boxee account be able to have it's own pandora account? Should I create a new bug report for this?

EDIT: I forgot the other 'interesting tidbit'... When I select to shutdown the box via the GUI, the screen goes blank and it appears like it's shutting down, then after a couple of seconds the hope screen pops up again. Selecting shutdown again shuts down the box normally and it stays off. This is repeatable. Could it be related?

Hey Rob, sorry for the delay to replying your question, I was testing other feauteres of Boxee Box to later open tickets on them. Anyhow Rob, I notice is becoming a frustrating issue to many and Tyler show us some more issues with Pandora App. I personally love the Pandora App, yes it has and it can improve in a couple of things to make it great but in answearing your question. The repetetive "Activate Pandora" Log in happens plain and simple, anytime from anyform, when you move away from the Pandora's Menu, I explain, you might be on Pandora listening to a station, and leave anyform(log out) by remote controll (menu button) to anything else(my tv shows, movies, apps, folder) and when you go back to Pandora, it ask you again and again evertime you go to it, to "Activate it". It is just not practical at all to continously be getting up and to your desktop/laptop and "activated" everytime. Please Advice!

Darwin and Tyler - Thanks for the extra effort in collecting some datapoints. Very helpful for debugging.

Do both of you have other users on your Boxes using the Pandora app?

Rob, I know I'm kind of merging bug reports here, but I was searching the database and found #APP-242 which exactly describes the pandora user account switching problem I mentioned previously. That bug report states that it was "Fixed at 11747" and "verified on boxee-0.9.21.12086" yet obviously it still exists in the boxee box version. Did the code branch?

I am a new user of the Boxee Box and have just experienced this issue. My box has the latest firmware and was activated and playing Pandora last night. The box was powered on all night (not power cycled). I had signed out of Pandora when I was finished listening to music last night. When I ran the Pandora app this morning I was presented the activate Pandora message.

Arthur, I think the key to this is what exactly you meant by "I had signed out of Pandora...". I expect if you really hit the 'sign out' link in the top right corner, then that is completely normal operation. I'd fully expect that functionality, otherwise how do you login with a different pandora account? What Darwin and I are talking about is that we never hit that 'sign out' link, and after rebooting the box we have to re-authenticate just like if we had hit the signout link. If you really hit the link, then I'd say stop doing that. You should be able to just pause the music and exit out of the app with the menu button. Next time you go back to the app you should be good to go. Just don't re-boot!

Tried a number of different ways to reproduce this issue with no luck.

Darwin and Tyler - can you reboot, set your log level to debug, launch the Pandora app, and attach your logs to this issue by following this procedure:

OK Rob, I've done it. I rebooted the box, started debug, launched pandora and activated it, paused pandora, shut down box, powered up box, launched pandora again and it required activation again (which I did). I sent a couple of the logs since I wasn't sure which one captured the events (I suspect rebooting creates a new log, and it appeared that sending the logs even created a new log). You have my MAC from above and my S/N is QL011A9001577. Please let me know what you find.

Merry Christmas!

Just adding my 2 cents. I have a Boxee box with current firmware. It has a single user on it, and I have the same Activate Pandora problem. I do not log out but instead simply exit Pandora using the button on the remote. When I launch again, it asks me to activate. I do, and it works again until the next time I exit it.

Yes Rob, I am able to pause my Pandora, turn off or reboot my Boxee Box and launch the Pandora Application again and have no need to activate my Pandora Account. I thought you along your team were able to fix it, but according to other members here, the problem persist on their end. Not sure what went different on mine but if i may provide additional information to help out, am always willing to do so, so all boxee box members can start enjoying the same joyful experience I am now enjoying with my Pandora Application

I'll follow the linked instructions sometime in the next day or so to send y'all some logs. If y'all can think of anything I can try to gather data for, feel free to email me me or comment here. I am having this issue an it is driving me crazy! It even happens, sometimes, when I simply back out of the app. It is one thing for the Box to lose all data every-time it is rebooted (frustrating) but it is something else to not be able to use what has been my favorite app of all time!

It's been over 5 weeks since I posted my logs. What is the progress if any? Do you need any further info to move forward? I will be happy to supply it. At this point the app I use the most on Boxee has become the reason I no longer use Boxee. I'm hoping this can get fixed soon because I'm ready to throw this thing out the window. It now seems like the worst Christmas present ever!

I'm using firmware 1.1.0.18969, and I still get this too. I don't see why pandora needs to be activated every time either, I don't use pandora due to this issue, but I'd like to :( It just got old fast having to log in EVERY day.

@Jason - still have been unable to reproduce this issue. Obviously it is happening with a sizable subsection of users, but having little luck identifying what it is that is causing the device to forget its authentication.

Got a hunch - can you share the value of the Hardware Version marker on the bottom of your device?

@Rob Spectre - I'd be willing to just ship my whole Boxee Box to you if it helps. Right now, it basically sits collecting dust. The watching videos part of it quickly wore off, even before Pandora did (used Pandora more even though I have to activate it each time I launch it). I'm a huge music guy and the main reason I bought it was to pipe Pandora through my stereo. If I can trust I'll get it back eventually, I'll box it up and ship it out tomorrow.

If you don't want that, please, ask me for whatever information you need to isolate the problem. If I can send you more detailed logs that will help, I will. I get these emails on my phone, so I'm quick to respond when you need me. Email me privately and I'll give you my phone number so we can speak if you want. I just want to do whatever I can to fix this $200 dust collector that sits on my shelf mocking me.

@Jason LaPrell

Good point. I think I'll be contacting D-Link tonight. Obviously a critical bug that has been open for 5 months without resolution that only happens to some units could possibly be hardware related, and therefor warranty related. I'll post my experience with that route.

@Rob Spectre

Please give us feedback if you feel this is the way to go, or not. Thanks.

I contacted D-Link on May 12th even without Rob's feedback. As of right now, I've had absolutely NO response from them. So not only is this bug being ignored, D-Link is ignoring requests for warranty.

@Rob

Anything? Can you make any comment whatsoever about this bug? Is anyone even working on it?

Tyler and Jason - whenever you launch any application, do you get a notification in the top right corner saying "downloading application"?

Yes I do, even if I've downloaded and used the app previously. I've always thought that was odd. I was thinking it was intentional though since the apps are so small and they download and install so fast, I figured it was a way to make sure your apps are always current.

Rob, it was a little clumsy for me. I did the factory reset and the firmware wouldnt update over the internet, kept failing. I had to update via usb, which wasnt a problem. Bottom line, it worked, and Pandora no longer is asking for sign in every time, nor do the apps say installing every time I start them. This seems to be the solution :) Good job, now you can help them fix the HD audio drops and I'll be a happy camper ;)

Damn, I had such high hopes. I held down the power button to get to the recovery menu, performed a factory reset, and then let the box download the update (which went smoothly for me). Everything appeared to work normally and I logged in normally. I went straight to the Pandora app, and of course it downloaded and required me to activate. I did and played a couple of songs, then paused the playback, hit menu to get back to the home screen and powered down the box through the GUI. When I powered the box back up, I went back to Apps and selected Pandora. It did not need to re-download the app this time, but unfortunately it immediately asked me to activate the box again. <sigh>

I know the factory reset worked because I have to re-setup my shares and scan my library, but I thought it was odd that the app list still had my same list of favorites (are those stored in your account I guess?)

Just restored Chris' unit to factory defaults, and I'm still no longer seeing this issue.

I suspect Factory Restore does not clear whatever corruption exists that is preventing apps from writing to the flash.

@Tyler - can you give the Reset All Settings a swing and report back?

No Go Rob. I went back to the recovery menu, did a Reset All Settings this time. Same problem. Downlaoded & activated Pandora. Played songs, powered off the box. Powered back on, went to Pandora (didn't download again), but it immediately asked me to activate. Just for grins, I did activate again, played some songs, paused it dropped back to the main menu (like always, NOT Logging out of Pandora), powered off, and when I booted back up and go into Pandora it asks me to activate again. Seems like my issue is deeper than a simple corrupted setting.

Is there any interaction with a users Boxee account? Perhaps the corrupted data lies in there. For grins, tonight I"ll try creating a new boxee account and doing this all over again.

@Tyler

Is the fact that it is not downloading each time a change for you, or has your box always behaved this way? My box would constantly download EVERY app, EVERY time I launched them. I thought it was normal, a way to keep them updated. Now I know better. I think the downloading over and over was the reason for the constant activation. It was like I was installing it for the first time every time I used it, therefore it had to activate. Yours isn't installing each time which means maybe your problem isn't exactly the same problem and the fix for my box isn't the fix for yours. Not sure how exactly this helps at all, but it does seem there is a distinction between your problem and mine.

OK Rob. I think I found the smoking gun to help you root cause this bug. It is certainly tied to my Boxee account. Tonight I created both a new boxee account and a new pandora account.

I went back into the recovery menu, reset all settings and logged into the box with my new boxee account (tstranik). I went to Pandora and activated the box with my new Pandora account. Played some songs, shut down, powered up and lo-and-behold it did NOT ask me to activate!!!! SUCCESS!!!!

So to dig a little deeper, I logged out of Pandora, and re-activated Pandora with my old Pandora account. Played some songs, powered off the box and when I powered back up Pandora was on the old account and STILL didn't ask me to activate!!

Still digging deeper, I went back to to the shutdown menu and hit select a different user. I removed my new boxee account (tstranik) and added my old boxee account (EskimoPie76). After I was back at the main menu, I loaded up Pandora (it asked me to activate) and so I activated the box with my new pandora account. Played some music, shut down the boxee box, powered it back up and sure enough Pandora asked me to activate again!

This seems pretty conclusive that the anomaly is tied directly to my Boxee account. Please let us know if that helps you out. For now I'll just switch back to my new boxee account and things should be working fine again.

Marcel, thanks for the suggestion, but you must not have read my last few updates. I've performed several "reset all settings" and they had no effect on my problem. Only after creating a new boxee account and logging into the box with that account did my Pandora activation issues cease. At least in my case, it's clearly tied to something in my account (please read my recent posts).

I have the same issue and it all started two upgrades ago. I am currently a the latest greates automatic upgrade. I was hoping it would fix the issue and it has not.
I deleted my account and started over hoping it was the two account problem and it was not. I have given up using the app on Boxee until it gets resolved I will use my Samsung BluRay.

Hey Rob,

It has been 8 months now since my last post on the Pandora activation issue. 'Till this day, it has be working fine without no further issues. I'am currently at Boxee Box most recent official firmware and haven't had issues with Pandora Activation. I do believe is more of a possible hardware/regional problem with the Boxee Box other users. Since then, I had purchase a total of 3 Boxee Box as family gifts and none have reported any issues with Pandora. Hope this information helps in anyway.

For a sake of adding my experience to this problem:
I also had a problem: every time I select a "shut down" or reboot a boxee box, next time I try to run a Pandora app it would ask me to reactivate.
I was hoping a new software/firmware would fix it by itself so I was waiting without taking any of the suggested steps here.
1.2 came out and my boxee updated to it and this behavior still persisted.
One thing I noticed from the very beginning:
-after I "activate" Pandora it would show "Signout" link in the top right corner when the app is running
-after I exit the app (not "shut down", just come back to it from sleep or other app) and come back to it it would show "login" link, the app would still have me logged in though,
and I could use the app normally
-clicking on the "login" link would pop up message "are you sure you want to log out" (or similar) and clicking "OK" would require "activate"
Today I did this:
-went to recovery mode/reset all settings
-then opened the app, "activated", exited, tried "shut down", returned to app and it asked me to "activate"
Then I:
-logged out of my current "account A" and selected "add new account"
-registered new "account B", opened the app, activated, exited, "shut down", returned to app and it did not ask me to "activate, top right link was "signout"
-switched from "account B" to "account A", opened the app, asked me to "activate" so I did it and it started playing but:
whenever I "shut down" or "switch accounts" or reboot:
account A would ask to "activate", account B would still be signed in.

I wanted the email that was associated with "account A" be THE email associated with boxee so I:
-from my computer I logged into my "account A" and deleted it
-from boxee box selected "add new user" and created a new "account C" with the email I wanted to use for boxee
-set up everything else, tried Pandora app and after 1st activation it would not ask me to reactivate
-deleted "account B"

The only thing I can't remember is if I originally created my boxee "account A" through the boxee box or some other way, but it may be that I created it through boxee website from my computer.
I spent the whole morning doing all this and I'm out of time but one way to troubleshoot this further would be to create the boxee account outside of boxee box and try logging into boxee box
with this account and see what happens with Pandora.

Good Day, I purchased my boxee on August 14th 2011 and hooked up and downloaded current firmware. I that created boxee account, and started pandora app. Logged into pandora, actviated the boxee w pandora. Signed out of pandora. shut down boxee. Couple hours later started boxee, went to start pandora, and asks for activation. If I dont signout it works ok. I can shut down and then use pandora again. Is there a fix for this?

Looks like a sandbox issue. Wasn't able to reproduce on my dvt unit however after looking at other users logs there seems to be a common issue. The settings registry isn't accessible:
ERROR: TPHandleFileSystemPolicy - blocking access to file: thread id 3090, file //.boxee/UserData/profiles/JORDAN112/apps/pandora/registry.xml, mode wb

Same issue for me. Everytime the app is exited and the boxee shutdown, it will require activation again.
