Live TV Troubleshooting

General troubleshooting

I don’t get any channels

Make sure your antenna or coax cable is connected securely to the Boxee Live TV dongle and that the dongle is all the way in the USB port.  You should see a blue light on the dongle (when the Boxee Box is powered on).  If the blue light is not on try the following:

  1. Try the other USB port.

  2. Ensure you are using the most recent Boxee Box firmware (Check under Settings > System > Update). If not, please update and try again.

  3. Plug in a USB drive to ensure your USB ports are functional.

I reconfigured Live TV and my preferences are lost

Yes, if you have edited the channel listing by hiding and renaming channels, or re-mapping schedule data, then this will be lost after reconfiguring Live TV via Settings.

Antenna troubleshooting

don’t get any channels

Use your TV's built-in tuner to find an ideal placement for your antenna.  To help troubleshoot, leave your antenna where it is and plug it into the back of your TV directly.  Scan for channels using your TV remote.  Once you find channels, leave your antenna where it is, but connect it to the Boxee Live TV dongle, and go through the setup process again (Settings > Live TV).

If you do not get any channels, please see below for websites that you can check to determine if broadcast signals are available in your area.

I only get a few channels

Your antenna could be in a bad location, or you may live in an area that does not get decent over-the-air reception. Your best bet is to head over to  AntennaWeb.org and enter your street address to get an accurate list of channels you can expect to get with an antenna.  On AntennaWeb.org  click “Choose an antenna”, input your ZIP code, hit continue, and you’ll see channel listings in your area.

I get channels, but do not get information for the lineup

  • Did you provide a postal code during Live TV setup?  If you skipped that step, then you will not get data for channels.  You’ll need to reconfigure your setup by going to Settings > Live TV and be sure to provide your postal code.
  • Did you enter the wrong postal code?  To see what you entered, go to Settings > Live TV.  At the bottom of the list you can see what your current configuration is.
  • There will be some channels for which Boxee will not be able to find matching data.  We are constantly working to include more coverage.

I get channels, but the lineup is incorrect

If you are getting data for the channels, but the show information is shifted, you might need to adjust the time settings on your box.  If you make a change to the time settings, you must reconfigure Live TV via Settings > Live TV.

If you are getting data for the channels, but the show information is completely incorrect, it could be that you provided an incorrect postal code that does not match the channels you get in your area.  Verify that your postal code is correct by going to Settings > Live TV.  At the bottom of the list you’ll see your current configuration.  If your postal code is incorrect, you must reconfigure your Live TV setup.

Cable/ClearQAM troubleshooting

I don’t get any channels

Double check that your coax cable is connected directly to the wall, and not to a cable set-top box.   If you have premium cable with a set-top box, you will need a splitter so one feed can go directly to the Boxee Live TV dongle, and the other to your provider's set-top box.  Boxee cannot decrypt premium cable signals on channels like HBO, Showtime, ESPN, etc.

If the cable is coming from the wall, double check that connections are securely tightened at both ends.

If cable is secure at both ends, it could be that your Internet/cable provider has encrypted the ClearQAM signal.  Contact your provider to ask them if they encrypt it.  If they do, be sure to let them know that you’re not happy about that!

I only get a few channels

These must be the only channels that are available in your area.  ClearQAM is different than the over-the-air broadcast signal. Geography and or physical obstructions do not factor into QAM signal availability or quality.

I get channels, but do not get information for the lineup

Depending on your Internet/cable provider, you may only see the channel's signal ID instead of channel lineup data.  You can edit your channel lineup by hitting LEFT while the channel listing is visible and selecting “Edit Channels.”  Click the “gear” icon for a channel.  You can now select a matching channel from the list in the bottom of the dialogue box.
