How do I add an RSS feed?

Boxee allows you to add your own RSS feeds of your favorite websites, so you can enjoy videos, music and pictures from websites no one has written a Boxee application for.

  1. Open the RSS in a web browser, so that the address will appear in the browser's address bar, and copy it to the clipboard.
  2. Open boxee, and go to the App Box.
  3. Go to My Feeds.
  4. Click on Add New Feed.
  5. Click on the Feed URL bar and paste the URL there.
  6. Check the correct feed type (which will determine whether this feed will show up under video, music or pictures applications in your Boxee menu).
  7. Confirm.

That's it. You should now see the new feed in the Applications section of the Boxee menu.

To remove the feed, just click on it from the feeds' list in the App Box and choose to remove.

which feeds are supported by boxee?

You can throw at Boxee any RSS which plays in iTunes, and any RSS which is mRSS compatible (more reading on media RSS here).

It is not possible to add a local rss feed (http://localhost:xxx). Is there a workaround or is it a possibility to add it to boxee?

Thanks in advance and I really love Boxee!

In the above please make sure that the id is the same as the folder name in ~/.boxee/UserData/apps

For example, in the above example the folder name must be my-video-feeds.

Another example to add geekbrief.tv (small version) in linux:

mkdir ~/.boxee/UserData/apps/gbtv

cd ~/.boxee/UserData/apps/gbtv

create a file called descriptor.xml with the following contents

<app>
  <test-app>true</test-app>
  <id>gbtvsmall</id>
  <name>GeekBrief.TV-SMALL</name>
  <version>1.1</version>
  <description>Video Podcast with news about tech tools and toys featuring Cali Lewis.  The format is fast, fun, fresh and flirty. Most Briefs are fewer than four minutes.</description>

  <email>support@boxee.tv</email>
  <type>url</type>
  <platform>all</platform>
  <minversion>0.0.9</minversion>
  <url>rss://www.podshow.com/feeds/geekbrief.xml</url>
</app>

I tried the app listed above with a local news channel's RSS feed. It did not load anything, the progress bar thing popped up but then went away. here's the RSS link in case you would like to try it: http://images.news14.com/news14raleigh_media/xml/rss_top15.xml

You failed to mention the name one should give to the empty folder?  Does one simply leave it as New Folder?

Thanks in advance.

Well after much tinkering I think I have a solution. Create an empy folder in the app folder of boxee (exact location depnds on if you are on mac or win but a simple should give you that info. Create a new file using a text editor, not ms word, called descriptor.xml and insert the following code:

<app>
  <id>my-video-feeds</id>
  <name>My Feeds</name>
  <version>1.1</version>
  <description>My Feeds</description>
  <thumb>http://dir.boxee.tv/apps/my-video-feeds/thumb.png</thumb>
  <test-app>true</test-app>
  <media>video</media>
  <copyright>Boxee</copyright>
  <email>support@boxee.tv</email>
  <type>url</type>
  <platform>all</platform>
  <minversion>0.9.5</minversion>
  <maxversion>0.9.14</maxversion>
  <url>INSERT HERE YOU RSS FEED URL</url>
</app>

Remember to replace the tex un the <url> tag with the rss address.

That will create a local test app in you boxee with the name my feeds that will show up in my apps list.

Hope this helps all of you who had my same problem...

Max

I have been looking at the support site and there seems to be a way to create and add a personal app to run as a test locally. I wrote to supportbut NOBODY got back with me. So no news on when and if the RSS will be implemented again and no help on creating your own....way to go boxee ;(

It would be nice if a user could also add RSS feeds via the Boxee website, just like you did with the services (Twitter, Facebook,  etc., see http://www.boxee.tv/services). Thanks!

THis does not work in the beta, will this be fixed? This dramatically reduces boxee's utility for me.

OOPS!!! In the beta issues list I just found "o RSS Feeds application not implemented" Keep up the good work Boxee team! I wouldn't have over reacted, but my wife wants her knitting feed back... you know how important "spousal buy-in" is!!! ;^)

I'm in the same situation. With the previous version the above instructions worked, in the current release however I can't add a video feed. I've added one through the media page but it never shows up anywhere (even on that screen). I also added one directly to the sources.xml file with no good results. However, when I added it to the xml file and then tried to add it via the screen, it told me a feed with that name already existed... even though it wouldn't show it to me. Thanks

Would be great if this could be added to the "Add to boxee" bookmarklet. That way if you click on the page it can add either the one video or the whole feed.

I've figured this out. You have to enter the format http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/users/USERNAME/uploads?alt=rss . That last part specifies that youtube should give you an RSS feed. Or something. I don't really know what it does, but it works. Cheers!   --Mason

I am trying to add the feed: http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/base/users/sneekylinux/uploads. This is the sneekylinux feed from youtube. When I add the feed via the website it tells me that the feed has been added successfully yet when I add through My applications in Boxee adding the feed fails.

Any ideas as to how I can add this feed rather than having to search through the youtube app?

I have added a feed, but when i try to play something the video comes up like it would on the original sites website with the play button. However the video never starts playing and i can't click on the play button on the screen. What did i do wrong or what do i need to do? Here's the feed i want to work. http://feeds.feedburner.com/GiantbombAll?format=xml

I wanted to add French catchup TV RSS feeds such as http://plus7.arte.tv/fr/1697480,templateId=renderRssFeed,CmPage=169...

but it won't play in Boxee : because Boxee cannot find the stream within the page? Because the video format cannot be read?

many thks in advance.
