My movie was not recognized or was incorrectly recognized!

Boxee requires users to properly name their media files according to IMDB file naming conventions to be recognized. Please visit this link to learn how to name more media files.

If you continue to have recognition issues, it may be because Boxee has changed the way it recognizes Movies. We are aware that it might cause some issues in recognizing your local movies. In order for us to try and resolve your movies asap please fill in this form and hit Submit.

Has there been any update to the manual editing of incorrect metadata? This is still an issue that I would very much like to correct on my Boxee Box (roommate is an art-house movie type and I hate seeing the blank poster placeholders). I'll go through and follow the naming conventions tonight, but would like to see this feature scheduled into a future release.

I agree,  one reason I returned the Boxee Box was this design oversight.  I cannot browse recognized and non recognized movies in one screen.  In addition seems like BBox no longer store Cover Art  locally and need to rebuild all the images each time you access Movie,  just imaging how long this would take if you have a few hundred movies.

Boxee Beta now has the option to retag media. Why is this still allowing comments?

Ok guys I found a solution to a problem.

  • THE PROBLEM: Boxee stopped tagging my videos and some videos were not even showing up at all, not even in the "unidentified files" section
  • CAUSE OF PROBLEM: I was playing around with Boxee for a few days, adding removing the same media folders ("manage sources" function), I believe it confuses Boxee and just stops reading files.
  • THE SOLUTION: Renamed the folders. It seems to refresh Boxees memory. All my videos have shown up, sure I had to re-tag a few, but they are all there.

Not sure if that makes sense, hit me up if have any questions.

I made the move from MyMovies/Media center to Boxee because it runs smooth. But I too agree it needs work, some kind of function to manually manage the movies. With the TV it does about 98% correct, but movies not such a great job. It will not tag some movies at all or it will tag them incorrectly. Some options like MyMovies would be great!

I don't know how the manual recognition option worked since I was not yet using Boxee in time for the alpha, however I was surprised that over 50 of my movies were not recognized.  All the files are tagged, but apparently the naming does not comply.  It is as if the app is designed to be too smart by half.  If local tag data are present, the application should first display the local tag data and then prompt the user it iMDB data are found to add or replace.  However - it currently works bass ackwards and ignores the movie unless it is found.  This also causes problems for home movies etc.  The must be fixed - it is just plain bad design.  This simple problem is enough to force me back to Front Row until it is fixed.  Thanks!

Please get something built so that I can see all my movies in Boxee. I do have some independent files that are not listed on IMDB that my kids love to watch.

If it can't find a match it is OK if it just displays a name. cover art is nice but not a necessity.

Also, I use separate directories to store my movies and TV shows. Based on location I should be able to control how these items are displayed in boxee. I have a few kids tv shows showing up in my movies.

So, I've added my 100th title to my network drive and boxee only recognizes 90 of them.  all along it's been about 90% file recognition in the sense that it only sees 90% of the files, leaving the other 10 in the ether.

is this something that is done deliberately?  being that this is beta software and all?

also, will there be a charge for the Boxee software once the Boxee Box comes out?

Will the Boxee Box be the only way to enjoy Boxee when the Boxee Box comes out?

oh, my wife is starting to use boxee over the cable box.  we've had xbmc for a while now, and she won't touch it for some reason.  if hd homerun works with it, boxee will probably end up replacing my cable ( and incredibly high bill) within the year.

the manually add function is sorely missed.  between XBMC and boxee, I think I'd rather have boxee, just for the simplicity of how it just works.  that said, however, the fact that boxee keeps picking the wrong movie covers for some of the 75% of the movies that it does recognise is tiresome.

and that said... I'll probably be buying at least the 1 since I'm almost positive that they'll put the cover functionality back in for the RTM version.   as far as boxee not seeing the missing 25% of my movies, that's a different matter entirely.  maybe they're working on that problem.

I must admit, Boxee is was a clever product in its alpha phase, clean, easy to manoeuvre, easy to manage in terms of film recognition etc.  The manual add function that has been removed is clearly bad judgement on the developers part, and I am really looking forward to the moment it reappears.  I would go one step further, if it is not in IMDB, perhaps we ought to be "allowed" to drop a small jpg/gif/png file in the relevant folder with our own thumbnail? and the ability to add our own description?  Perhaps a .txt file with the video title, genre, year and description?

I have a number of home video's saved on my network share, we access them from time to time, it would be so handy to not have to guess which one it is...

The theme is also something I think needs improvement.  For example, if one of my friends has watched something "dodgy" I dont want my kids to see it!!  I dont mean porn - I mean scary stuff, blood and guts stuff...  Why not give users the option to revert to the old Alpha theme?

To me, open source is everything microsoft is not, so please guys, stop "dictating" how we use the box and give us more choices - ie listen to the folk on here, the users of the system, who ultimately rate your product and recommend it to others.

All that said, this is still a fabulous product that I am very very happy with despite the small drawbacks in the beta.  Thanks guys!

"of 700 movies recognised by Boxee alpha, only 4 are recognised by boxee beta (two mis identified) :/ - of 100 tv series only 2 are recognised by boxee beta"

I think you may have a problem with your filenames/paths. In my case only 2 of ~600 movies mislabeled and 2 not identified. All of 36 TV series recognized properly.

Although it is Very frustrating not being able to manually correct the errors and resort to browsing folders because of  this, not to mention the uncertainty of others files that may be excluded.

Boxee is still the best option fot HTPC imo.

Keep up the GREAT work, It is very appreciated :)

I also had a support request on this closed with a similar response to "It will be included in a future build". I am happy with that response as I understand that Boxee JUST reached Beta status and they did a complete overhaul of several areas. I'm not surprised that there were a few feature regressions. I'm just glad the features will be returning.

I have also seen some negativity about this release. I was already using Plex on my MacBook for watching video, so waiting a little longer for the next build isn't too bad for me. If you use Plex, XBMC, or another media center, just stick with it a little bit longer if this is a showstopper for you, as it is for me. They are working on it. There's no need to flame the developers or downplay the accomplishments they have made because of one regression.

On a side note, I am looking forward to the Boxee box. I was pondering the purchase of a Mac Mini since the Apple TV can't handle HD very well. But now I'm holding out for The Box :)

@Dave Wells.  You get that this is a beta version of a *free* Open Source application, right?  You get that the form-factor was intentional, I'm certain, a carefully considered trade-off between branding and tradition?  And that people that call other people idiots are themselves just rude?

No? Ok, Just Checking.

Seriously, I'm looking forward to the return of better movie recognition and manual metadata editing, but the negativity is unnecessary.  Boxee is really a great, I believe ultimately game changing, product. And it's free.  So it's not we have any reason to complain if it doesn't work for us.

Since we know the manual feature is going to be back, and that that the algorithms are being worked on, maybe it's time to close this thread, if possible?  Moderators?

Utterly useless.  My first look at Boxee after a quick evaluation of XBMC.  XBMC recognises all of my movies with no bother at all.  Boxee barely recognises half of them.

I don't want all the Apps or the internet feeds.  I just want to play my movies.  Boxee is not for me thank you.

The only good thing to come from this is that I won't want to purchase a Boxee Box.  Whoever thought of a design that doesn't fit into standard media cabinet is clearly an idiot.

Of Course we realize that we can manually browse files, and I do that for the movies that don't get recognized correctly.  However, I would prefer to use the "movies" interface, as I imagine the developers of boxee intended I use as well.  Having a manual recognize function would greatly aid me in that endeavor, so we are bringing this to the attention of the developers, and guess what?  They've already planned on adding it, so it's working.

This is not being lazy, this is not called complaining, this is called feedback, and it is helping to improve boxee.  Not only am I glad to see that boxee wants to know what we think, but I am pumped that they are actually planning on implementing changes based on user experience and feedback.  I will continue to use boxee, not just because it's awesome, but because of this dedication to its users.

And I thought I was going mad not been able to find it :) An area that lists all files that are un-recognized would be a nice quick way to go about doing it, its suprising it can't do it as in the Alpha the top suggestion was always correct. 2 examples of unrecognized / missrecognized files which I believe follow the naming convention correctly are:

"Panforium (2009)" -> ?
"G-Force (2009)" -> Air Force 1

Thanks for Boxee.  Love the concept and LOVE the new interface.  My wife also digs it, which is a huge plus, but can't really move over to it until this issue is resolved in some way.

Only about 15 out of about 100 movies were found, with no discernable pattern as to which ones were found or skipped.

Quoting from the forum post Reporting and Resolving Boxee Beta Issues [UPDATED: 01-11-10] ( http://forum.boxee.tv/announcement.php?f=9 ) :

Local TV Shows and/or Movies not are not being resolved, or have the wrong metadata.

  • First, make sure you your media files are named according to Boxee's media naming specifications.
  • Boxee does not offer a way to correct missing/incorrect media.
This feature will be re-added in a future build. In the meantime, you can use this form to submit incorrect TV Shows and this one for incorrect Movies.

I have to add a "me too" to this thread.  I've got several movies and tv shows that are either not recognized or incorrectly recognized.  A manual edit function similar to what was in alpha would be awesome.  I love Boxee, and look forward to being able to use it more, this would definitely help!  Thanks to the Boxee team for all the great work.

Whilst I think the tenor of many of these comments is way off (I mean, seriously, be nice. Boxee is a free product!), I agree that the manual option has to be a "must-have", rather than a "nice-to-have".  Since it doesn't give you the option, a la XBMC, of designating certain paths for movies and others for TV shows, it also mis-identifies lots of TV shows as movies.  Also, most of the films I actually archive are ones that may not be widely available from other sources because of their rarity.  These are, of course, the least likely to be correctly identified.

I also think that this particular reporting mechanism (the google form) is not well designed.  I have literally dozens of files that aren't being correctly identified. It's too much to ask a beta tester to go through each of his/her movies like that.  I think that, in the developers' desire to make the perfect system, they haven't included the tool (manual edit) that helps in case it isn't.

All that said, I really love the new interface and much else about the Beta. My only real complaints are around the recognition issue.

I must say that I am also surprised that Boxee decided to remove such critical functionality from the Beta. Usually, when going from Alpha to Beta, things are supposed to get better and more polished. The new way of organizing local and remote TV shows and movies is awesome and a great idea, but it's all for nothing if it can't identify half of my local library and scatters the other half between TV Shows and Movies and offers me no way to fix it.

If you want to remove the manual recognize function, you need to fix the automatic recognize function first.
